Barry Barnes Memorial Tourney

The Barnes-MT

Barry in his garden

CURRENT TOURNEY STATUS

Entries close on 31st December 2026.

At this stage there have been 11 entries by 8 composers from 7 countries.

Due to the difficulties the British Chess Problem Society had organising a composing tourney in memory of their late, distinguished colleague, chess problemist Barry Barnes, a small group of Barry’s friends got together to run a tourney themselves. It is open to all chess composers in all countries, as Barry would have wished.

It is a theme tourney devised by David Shire and is judged by him. It is directed by Brian Stephenson. The announcement can be viewed by clicking on the announcement menu item above The award will also be published here in due course.

We are pleased to announce that other friends of Barry have anonymously donated a total of £500 as a prize-fund for this tourney. This amount will be divided up between award-winners once the award is final.

If entrants (and non-entrants!) wish to send us their memories of Barry, we will be pleased to publish them here along with the award.
